Frankfurt am Main International Airport

Three Seconds

Frankfurt am Main International Airport enters the investigation through a water-damaged envelope and a possible courier connection. It becomes less a scene than a point of departure: a lead that helps Ewert Grens identify Zofia Hoffmann as the likely sender, while underscoring how readily she can remain beyond the authorities’ reach.

The Envelope and Its Trail

The envelope has no stamps, but a partly legible postmark appears in its upper-right corner. Grens makes out the word Frankfurt, six numbers, and a mark that might be a bird or a plane; the remaining traces are blurred by water. The uncertain marks offer no direct identification, but they give him a place to investigate.

Grens consults Horst Bauer, a detective superintendent at the Bundeskriminalamt in Wiesbaden with whom he had previously worked. Bauer makes three calls while Grens waits, and the inquiries suggest that the envelope was probably sent through a courier company with offices at Frankfurt am Main International Airport. The airport thus enters the case as a likely link in the envelope’s route, not as a confirmed location where its sender was seen.

Scale and Anonymity

Grens presents the airport’s scale as part of the problem: 265 destinations, 1,400 flights, and 150,000 passengers each day. Those figures turn the postmark into a clue with sharply limited reach. Frankfurt may indicate where the courier system handled the envelope, but the volume moving through the airport offers no simple way to identify who sent it or where that person went.

Role in the Investigation

Grens becomes convinced that Zofia Hoffmann sent the envelope. He tells Mariana Hermansson that the authorities cannot issue a warrant for Zofia’s arrest abroad and have no grounds to pursue or even search for her. The airport’s connection to the message therefore helps narrow the investigation toward a likely sender without resolving her whereabouts or making her legally reachable.

The airport’s narrative significance lies in that distinction between tracing a message and finding a person. Its vast network provides a plausible route for the envelope, but the same scale that makes the route legible leaves Zofia beyond the investigators’ grasp.
